West Airlines Go ahead, the sky is waiting. West Airlines is currently the 5th largest U.S. airline, after Delta/Northwest, American, United, and Continental. The U.S. Economic crisis and sky-high oil prices has hit the airline fairly hard, making the airline lose money for 3 straight quarters, reduce flights, and raise ticket prices. The airline has raised some fees, but has not added a first or second baggage fee. Some aircraft deliveries, particularly the 737-700s and 777-300ERs, have been delayed, and the A319, 747-8i and E195 orders have been cancelled. Currently the airline's major hubs are Los Angeles, Miami and Portland, with focus cities in Seattle and San Francisco. History: Beginnings West Airlines was founded on September 26, 1965 in Portland, Oregon. The airline was originally planned to be based in Hawaii flying from Honolulu to LAX, but a more suitable regional airline model was adopted. The airline started with 4 Boeing 737-100s originally intended for Lufthansa, but instead taken by investors of West Airlines. The first destinations out of Portland were Boise, San Francisco, Seattle, Spokane, and Vancouver, offering two-class service at reasonable fares. Later on, West Airlines co-launched the Boeing 737-200 with United and took delivery of over 30 examples from 1968 until 1975. The airline expanded to every major city on the West Coast with a hub in Portland and focus cities in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1976, when the airline became limited in capacity, struggling start-up carrier Pacific Air was bought along with its 3 Boeing 727-200s and Los Angeles base. This added routes from Los Angeles to Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver, and Houston, at the time were brand new cities not accessible to West Airlines. Deregulation and beyond In 1978, when the airline industry became deregulated, West Airlines took a highly risky step by attacking Continental, Frontier, and United at Denver's Stapleton Airport. New routes to Boise, Colorado Springs, Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle-Tacoma, and Spokane were added with a mixed variety of Boeing 727 and 737-200 aircraft. By 1980, the airline had cut over 75% of the added routes due to counter attacks from incumbent airlines. To reverse the damage caused by Denver, West Airlines ordered 15 Boeing 727-200 and 15 737-200 aircraft for expansion out of California. This eventually boosted the fleet to 26 727-200 and close to 50 737-200 aircraft by 1983. In 1983, West Airlines again co-launched another 737 model, the 737-300. Along with Southwest Airlines and US Air, 12 initial examples were ordered to test long range routes from Portand to Chicago O' Hare, Kansas City, Minneapolis-St Paul, and St Louis, and Los Angeles to Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, Kansas City, and St Louis. The 737-300s proved highly successful and an additional 30 examples were ordered to start replacing the 20 oldest 737-200s and extra expansion to the Midwest. In 1988, when West Airlines had already built up fortress hubs in LAX and Portland, Boeing 757-200 and 767-300ER aircraft were ordered to test the transcontinental and Hawaiian market. With Pan Am and Eastern failing in the transcontinental market, this gave an opportunity to take market share from the major airlines. By 1990, a fleet of 12 Boeing 757-200s and 5 767-300ERs had given West Airlines nationwide coverage to Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O' Hare (from LAX), Honolulu, Kahului, Miami, Newark, New York JFK, Orlando, Philadelphia, and Washington Dulles and a 25% share in the New York-Los Angeles market. By 2000, West Airlines ordered Boeing 737 NG and 777 aircraft to start international flights to Asia by 2001. But the September 11th terrorist attacks changed all of that... 9/11 Aftermath The 9/11 attacks delayed West Airlines 777 deliveries and international expansion, and caused the airline to cut its transcontinental services to New York for almost a year until conditions became better. 10% of its work force was cut and flights from its hubs were reduced until about 2003, when the airline started hiring again and expanding again. The 8 Boeing 777-200ERs ordered in 2000 were delivered from 2003-2005 and flights from LAX to Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore (via HKG), and Tokyo-Narita, and from Portland to Tokyo-Narita were launched. Ladies And Gentleman, after due consideration, I've decided to completely revamp the CS Canadian Airlines brand and service. It was time that the airline break free of the "canadi>n airlines" shell and begin anew. This is great as it comes at a time in which the air travel industry is feeling the pressure of the economy. We have recently acquired former rival airline Dominion Airways (branded as "dominion", including it's regional subsidery, dominair) and plan to relaunch every airline currently under the CSgroup banner as a new airline. It is time that Canada be introduced to a fresh new way of thinking about air travel. It is about time that luggage are not lost every flight anymore. It is time that we break free of bad customer service and rude flight attendants. Ladies and Gentleman/Mesdames et Messieurs, Welcome aboard/bienvenue à bord du nordern The nordern name was chosen because of it's simplicity, it's conveyance of the airline and our country's position on top of the world (quite literally), and because the name is universal, whether you're from Anglophone Canada or Francophone Canada. The brand is a complete departure from the canadian brand. While it continues to focus on the 5 star asian airline inspired service, nordern is updated and completely modernized and quite possibly could be considered the illegitiment child of Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. As we continue to rebrand and modernize our existing airlines (HINT HINT WEST AIRLINES/AURA), we will be staying in touch with our loyal customer base.
Hey Spyco! Yes, I got your hint about rebranding. Here is what I've got planned for West Airlines...As a member of the CS Group of airlines, West Airlines (WT) will follow in the company's footsteps in rebranding and refreshing the entire brand and image of the airline. In the wake of the Global Financial Crisis, and the extreme impact it is having on the airline industry, we would like to introduce a brand new image for travelers: sapphire sapphire brings the professionalism and quality found on all West Airlines and CS Canadian services, but in a fresh new attitude. 3 classes of service on all flights, a reinvigorated fleet of new aircraft, and quality service in all aspects of the airline. With hubs in Portland, Los Angeles, and Miami, and a modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, sapphire is sure to get you where you're going on time and with superior care & comfort. PacifiCAL Takeover As part of introducing a new image, we have bought out our main regional West Coast competitor, PacifiCAL. PacifiCAL is a low-fare, high-quality service airline based out of Sacramento and major bases in San Francisco and Ontario and a fleet of modern Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The takeover includes the rebranding of all intra-California sapphire flights as PacifiCAL (excluding LAX-SFO), but with greatly improved service and comfort. A new First Class product will be installed, based on the Empress Suite on existing Canadian airlines domestic flights. A contract recently signed with Starbucks coffee and Red Arrow Catering (catering arm of West Group) will offer a new in-flight product on LAX-SFO, LAX-SMF and SFO-SAN morning flights dubbed the Morning Express- offering complimentary Starbucks Coffee beverages (brewed fresh onboard) and an assortment of morning pastries and bagels to all passengers. More details to come. ![]()
I forgot about AusStar...It wasn't very good anyway. The newest airline is atlantica aviation (atav). It is a aircraft charter/leasing company, created by Max (Cormiermax) and I. We haven't worked out our complete fleet, but here is a partial list: Airbus: Undecided number of Airbus A319-133's (one operated for Detroit Red Wings) Airbus A330-243 (on order, some to be operated for the Canadian air force) Boeing: 5 Boeing 767-400ER (operated for the Canadian air force, pic in database) 3 of the CC-176's are in transport configurtaion, the other two are fitted with two wing mounted hose-and-drogue style refuelling systems and also has a 'flying boom' refuelling system under the rear fuselage. atlantica aviation is based at Halifax/Shearwater and will be operating at the 'new' (fictitious) Halifax airport soon. atlantica is also building a fleet of general aviation aircraft as a new division. More to come! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
