How Out?

Maybe its just me but take a look at the "New Photos" page. You see the average views so far for the first page ranges from about 10-200 except for Bobby's BA 777 which is 1000+ views already. Is that actually possible?

I'm just finding it really dodgy (maybe even unfair) that some views jump up tremendously over a few hours/minutes. Some of us have to patiently wait for our submissions to climb up the list to make "Most Recent Popular" and then to find out its been kicked out by someone else's that "miraculously" makes it into the list. Maybe its just me but it almost seems like the same people every time. Don't get me wrong, some of those designs are really good but are they so good to generate up to 500-1000 views in a few hours? I've kinda been keeping record of my views and the most I got in a day was 200-300

Well, there is a way that one could spontaneousely program a computer (or even several computers for that matter) to keep opening and closing a certain link automatically (or refreshing the link), in this case a picture, without any human interraction. I have seen a couple people at my school do it on several computers during an online contest. They programmed the computer to automatically refresh so as to keep voting for our school for hundreds, maybe even thousands of times in a couple hours.

Yeah, I have seen it happen too.
It doesn't seem right.

I think our counters here are done by IP addresses, not by refreshes. The people vying for views would get ridiculous really fast. I know AOL gives a unique IP address every time you log on. I guess if you kept logging on and off AOL and viewing the pictures you could inflate it a bit, but certainly not hundreds of times an hour.

The only times I've really seen views get inflated is when a photo is linked on Airliners.net, but I haven't seen any in about a week. Our daily visitor numbers have been hovering around normal with the exception of the 19th when we had a pretty big spike. Since the photo has been uploaded we've had 2500-3000 unique visitors.

Honestly, I don't know. You're right. It seems odd. I can tell the photo you're talking about. It has over 1000 views while the other 17 of the first 18 haven't even broken triple digits. Crazy things can happen, I guess.

Why so great different of views? I think: if the peolple who visit the site is about 200-600 per day, how is possible that they become up 1.000-2.000 in a hour? and then why did they click only one image? Which are the reasons? How many visitors the site has per day normally?

I can see why that last example has a pretty big discrepancy in views. 10 days is a pretty good amount of time. Aside from being quirky, that A320 float plane spent a great deal of time on the front page.

You're right.

Every time we're linked from Airliners.net we have the servers working hard for the 2-3 hours it's at the top of the A.net forum index. Generates around 5000 views or so in average, but the server load is also showing the thumbnails (which ar e taken from our servers) ten-thousands of times in the same time.

That Sky Team 777 was linked on Airliners.net a couple days ago in the topic about the Sky Team 767-400. I saw it for myself. We've had quite a spike in visits the last few days to go along with it.
